About Remedial Massage

Remedial Massage is a therapy that treats muscles that are damaged, tense, immobile or causing pain. It is beneficial for a number of problems that affect muscles, tendons and bones and can be strong and deep or gentle and shallow depending on the problem.

As problems within muscles can radiate pain to other areas of the body, remedial massage aims to get to the root cause of the pain, which will tackle both the cause of the problem and the symptoms.

Remedial massage can be used to help people with:

  • neck, shoulder or back pain
  • preventing injuries
  • headaches
  • sports or other injuries
  • arthritis
  • chronic pain
  • fatigue
  • anxiety or depression
  • to treat the side effects of cancer, such as lymphoedema
  • to manage the side effects of diabetes

Did you know that injury, damage or inflammation can change the way we use our muscles and ligaments altering the position and correct function of our limbs.

For example damage to an ankle or knee can affect the way we walk because of pain that is experienced through the formation of adhesions, damaged muscle tissues and bruising: this in turn can cause dysfunctional movement of the pelvis, sacrum and spine which can then cause imbalance in the shoulder and neck area.

Massage, Muscle and Ligament Manipulation Therapies are performed to address the above, assisting in restoring balance and helping with pain reduction with the intention of restoring balance to muscles, ligaments and joints.

Pregnancy Massage

With special facilities in my Clinic for pregnant Mums, massage can be enjoyed in absolute comfort and safety during pregnancy.

Massage is an excellent way to prepare for the birth of your baby: endorphins, are secreted naturally by the body, and pass via Mother to the placenta, these are known as the ‘feel good’ hormones and help to calm and soothe.

There are many benefits for a pre-natal massage it is relaxing, soothing and stress free. It helps ease any back pain, helping muscles and ligaments adjust to accommodate for a growing baby in preparation for a calmer birth.

Benefits of Massage

Many people believe that the benefit of massage is restricted to relaxation –while this a very important part, there are many other health and wellbeing benefits.

Massage can prevent the formation of fibrous adhesions, can separate dense fascia, help reduce inflammation, assist with swelling in the joints and help with recovery from soft tissue and muscle injuries.

Massage improves circulation which increases blood flow and oxygen supply to the muscles contributing to efficient working and repair by the body, alleviating muscle spasm and nerve irritation.

A massage treatment releases endorphins (neurotransmitters) which are brain chemicals that produce feelings of well being and calm.

Massage also stimulates the lymphatic system which relies on free movement of muscle and is essential for removal of toxins, waste and other metabolic by-products which contribute to good health and a feeling of well being.

After a period of physical exertion, training or exercise, a post event massage can be an excellent way to recover and alleviate delayed onset muscle soreness.

Maintenance massage aids recovery, prevents injury and/or addresses an existing injury. This type of deep tissue massage usually includes full body to counteract and balance thoracic spinal rotation in conjunction with pelvic rotation.
